This week's Student of the Week is Maziar H. (we need a better photo!!)
Maziar is a really sweet guy. He often comes in to talk before school or at lunchtime. He usually has something to tell me; perhaps its a new book he is reading, or a recently watched video. Sometimes he gets so excited as he explains things to me that he starts speaking faster and faster and faster. It gets so it's almost hard to follow him. It's very endearing and it actually points to one of Maziar's most enduring qualities: his great enthusiasm for things that interest him. Of course the BEST example of this was when Maziar read a book on coding for his Term 2 project. He just kept getting more and more into it. I looked forward to seeing him every day so he could regale me with tidbits from the book and share his ever-growing love for the book. I can't wait to read it myself now! One thing I'll always remember about Maziar is how Mr. Modder worked him without mercy when Maziar was a CS student. I'd go by Mr. Modder's room at 4pm (or later!) sometimes and Maziar would be in there, happily marking papers. It's another indication of what a nice guy Maziar is. Always eager to help and always quick with a smile. I thought I was only going to have the opportunity to teach you once, Maziar (after you took that Summer School course) but I'm so very happy that our paths met up once more (for three additional years no less!). Thanks for always being so warm and friendly and thanks for your honesty and sincerity. All the best to you MH! A friend of mine (another ultra-cool math teacher) sent me the following email. Are any of you fine people interested in doing some volunteer work this summer? If so, please let me know ASAP!! Thanks!
This summer, July 15 to July 20 inclusive, the PME and PME-NA conference is coming to UBC. The Psychology of Math Education conference began in 1976 and has grown over the years to become the largest international math education conference in the world. This is the first time the PME or its North American counterpart has come to Vancouver. Here is the website: http://www.pme38.com/ Short story: we need student volunteers. I appeal to you to help gather a group of students from your school (math department groupies?, service hour junkies?). We know that this volunteer opportunity can support community service hours as part of the Grad transitions needed for graduation as well as IB volunteer hours. Volunteers will be provided food and a t-shirt that they will be able to keep. They will also gain experience in being part of, and observing, an international conference; they may also attend some presentations. Their responsibilities will include being present in hallways and rooms to help with directions, schedule information and for some, technical support. There will also be some clean-up and escorting, carrying, and couriering. The usual conference things. The shifts are as follows: (hours are approximate and subject to slight change) July 15 afternoon 2pm – 7:30pm July 16 morning 8:30am – 2:00pm afternoon 1:30pm – 7pm July 17 morning 8:30am – 2pm afternoon 1:30pm – 7pm July 18 morning 8:30am – 2pm afternoon 1:30pm – 5pm July 19 morning 8:30am – 2pm afternoon 1:30pm – 5pm July 20 morning 9:00am – 2pm (clean up crew) Thanks Stefan A (and thanks Mr. Herbert!)
