This week's Student of the Week is Armando R (I am anticipating a good photo from Nikan to be sent my way soon).
What can you say about Armando? He's just a GREAT GUY!! So nice, polite, friendly, funny, thoughtful. He might hate this but when I think of Armando (and his also-awesome brother Alejandro) one of the first things that comes to my mind is "these guys must have incredible parents". I don't have boys of my own but if I did I'd hope they'd be as respectful, even-tempered, and amicable as Armando. So kudos to your parents and kudos to you too, Armando! Thanks for always bringing such a bright presence to my classroom. You never caused me a bit of trouble and I admire you for all your hard work throughout your high school life (academics and basketball included). Armando, you are a very charismatic person - a "people person" - and this is one of the most important skills to have in today's world. It is for this reason that I know you will be very successful in the future. I wish you luck and I hope you never lose your charming manner and ever-present smile. Thirteen-year-old Luke Robitaille was named the 2017 Raytheon Mathcounts National Champion, beating a field of 224 to take home the top prize.
Robitaille, a seventh grade home school student from Euless, Texas, answered the following question correctly to win: "In a barn, 100 chicks sit peacefully in a circle. Suddenly, each chick randomly pecks the chick immediately to its left or right. What is the expected number of un-pecked chicks?" He hit his buzzer in .9 seconds with the right answer. Stephanie Mui doesn’t recall the specifics of the math problem presented to her fourth grade class years ago. Regardless, it was so difficult, it even stumped her teacher. Not Mui, though.
“To solve it I remember I had to set up a system of algebraic equations and basically just solve them simultaneously,” said the 17-year-old from Fairfax. So, Stephanie Mui is pretty sharp at math. Which makes sense. She has been working to master the subject since she was a little kid. According to Mui, she was learning addition and multiplication in preschool, and really, she just kept rolling. Mui proved to be so bonkers good at math that after fifth grade she started taking community college courses. She didn’t stop there. On Saturday, Mui will be the youngest among more than 8,700 graduates at George Mason University’s 50th commencement. She has earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Virginia’s largest public university, a milestone reached before she has even graduated from high school. Did you even know that was a thing people could do? This week's Student of the Week is Aneesha B!!
I only taught Aneesha for a very short time but she has really made a big impression on me over the past three years. There are so many things that I will remember about her:
So sad to see the passing of Chris Cornell. Soundgarden was my favourite band of the early 90's (even more than Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc). When I think back to parties I attended in highschool and early university years, the soundtrack to my memories is Soundgarden. Incredible band. Great memories. I saw them a couple of times in concert and Chris Cornell was AMAZING!! What an incredible look (6 foot 2, long hair, good looking guy, seldom with a shirt on) and WHAT A VOICE!! Four-octave range and this guy could HOWL!! My favourite album was Badmotorfinger and this is my favourite song... Thanks for the incredible sounds Mr Cornell! R.I.P. |
