My PreCalculus 12 classes had a strange third term assignment: do something (ANYTHING!) that you are proud of. I wanted to highlight some of the amazing things that these students did. Way to go everyone. I am very proud of you too!!
This week's Student of the Week is Isabelle L! That's her in the photo above, at her convocation (yesterday!!) from BCIT. She was kind enough to invite me to attend. I was so proud of her for earning her diploma in Marketing Management with a specification in Professional Sales. But, more than the diploma, what makes me most proud of Isabelle is the sort of person she is.
I taught Isabelle multiple times at KG and she always - ALWAYS!! - came to a class with a big, beautiful smile on her face (see above), with enthusiasm and good cheer. She is one of the most positive and passionate people that I have ever met. I love this young lady. EVERYBODY loves this young lady. It is literally impossible to spend time with Izzy and not feel better about yourself and your day. I remember one time, I was having a rough day. Isabelle's Math 11 class was arriving and there were a few grumbles and complaints from people about the homework, upcoming tests, etc. I was getting progressively annoyed and then Izzy arrived: Isabelle (mega-watt smile): Hi Mr Wadge! I hope you are having a wonderful day. Me: Wait! Can I see you out in the hall for a moment please Isabelle? Isabelle (scared looking): Uh... okay We went out into the hall, I closed the door, and proceeded to tell her how much I appreciated having her in my class, how I could always count on her to brighten my day, how I loved teaching her, etc. There were big hugs and I think both of us were on the verge of tears. It was pretty sappy (and pretty great) in retrospect. But that's the sort of impact Izzy has on people. The day of Isabelle's graduation from KG, she presented me with a tie. Thankfully, she has great taste. In fact, I swapped it out immediately and wore it to Izzy's grad. And now, three years later, I got to wear it again to her BCIT graduation. When you get your Master's degree, I'll be there with my / your tie, Isabelle!! There are some students that you remember always because they were such great students. But there are other students that you remember because they were such great people. Isabelle, it has only been three years since you graduated high school (and four since I taught you) but I honestly can not remember what sort of Math marks you got in my class. But I will NEVER forget what a amazing presence you had and the joy you brought to those around you. I wish you well at your new job (at Arcteryx!!) and I know that you will be successful. All the best Izzy!! I got #2 wrong. If nothing else, try number 3. Very counter-intuitive!
By the way, the host is Howard Stern. Remember: his name came up on the daily puzzles and I was telling you how he makes $80 million a year!! New music from my favourite band. But DON'T WATCH THE VIDEO!!! It's awful!! This week's Student of the Week is Pedram T. I have a great photo to include but it is sitting on my computer at school. Wait for it...
Pedram is a charismatic, gentle guy. He's had his ups and downs during his time at King George (hey! Who hasn't?) but I can honestly say I am sad to see him go and will remember him with much affection. Here are four of my favourite Pedram memories:
