Interesting - and short - article. I encourage you to read it. Here's my favourite quote from it: The key to math success seems to be combining a manageable amount of worry with a tendency toward perseverance and a belief in hard work. Perseverance and hard work!! It's what I preach over and over and over to you guys!! The research backs me up!!
Inspired by the blog post below, I decided to google "Yanal Marji". A sampling of what I found...
(Not sure what is more disturbing. The third picture (that honestly showed up) or the fact that my daughter appears in one of these photos!!) A few questions about these statistics (for my wadgemath.ca website):
This week's Student of the Week is Eugene K.
Eugene is a good - REALLY good! - Math student. I am hoping that he will continue on with (at least some) mathematics in his post-secondary education. No pressure Eugene but you certainly have a "knack" for the subject. If you enjoy it, you might want to consider a math degree. There are LOTS of good things you can do with that (NOT joking!). One of my favourite things is when Eugene is in his "math-zone". You'll look over at him and his pencil will be going a mile a minute. He's scrawling all over the page. Sometimes you can hear him mumbling ideas to himself as he works away. And he works FAST! It's quite a sight to see! For a slow, methodical worker like me, it's very impressive to see someone fly through his work (while maintaining accuracy) like Eugene. The other amazing thing about Eugene is how humble he is. Sometimes I'll see him completing a particularly difficult problem or puzzle. Rather than shouting at the top of his lungs - "I DID IT!!" - and dancing around the room, showing everyone his achievement (like I would) he usually shrugs and returns his paper to his binder. Not a word is spoken. Impressive. Mind you, maybe he never found the question that hard in the first place. One of my favourite memories of Eugene is sure to be his goal for the future: "earning lots of money in order to buy a Ferrari. I want to drive it over to Mr. ****, in order to show him that he was wrong when he announced that nobody would ever own such a car in the Grad 2014 class". Talk about an unexpected (and hilarious) answer! Thanks, Eugene, for all your determination over the past four years. I am sorry if you were not challenged enough at times. I wish you all the best in the future. I am sure you will live a life full of many incredible accomplishments (whether you get that Ferrari or not). Take care! Brazilian mathematician claims that you CAN predict lottery numbers. Weird!
